10 Common Mistakes Yogis Make When Trying to Lose Weight

Yoga, in all its forms, helps you improve your body movement and leads to proper breathing.

When done correctly and daily, it also helps you reduce weight. However, as a yogi, you often make some common mistakes in an attempt to practice yoga for weight loss. Here are some mistakes you totally need to avoid.

Common Mistakes Yogis Make When Trying to Lose Weight

Wrong breathing technique

You cannot gain from yoga if your breathing technique is incorrect. No matter how well you know a posture or how long you are able to hold it, without proper breathing you will not achieve the results. Therefore, make sure that your breathing technique is correct and you don’t overdo it or breathe little or hold your breath during asanas.

Overdoing yoga postures

Yoga postures are meant for a reason and need to be done as directed. Just because you are good at something, doesn’t mean you overdo it. As a yogi, don’t hold a posture for longer than your body allows or don’t stretch beyond your limit.

Starting with wrong classes

Assuming that advanced classes will help you lose weight quickly, you enroll in the same. This is not a good move as you need to get your body in form and always start with the basics. At Ekam Yogashala, classes are offered from beginner to advanced stages to help your body gain from yoga naturally.

Getting too far too early

Weight loss will not happen in days from when you start yoga. It takes time for your body to get used to the practice and show results gradually. Losing patience and pushing too hard to get the results will not get you too far.

Not following your schedule

If you are determined to lose weight with yoga, make sure that you follow a routine. Practicing yoga, as and when you feel comfortable, will not work towards weight loss. You need to follow a dedicated routine no matter how well aware you are with yoga forms.

Forgetting proper diet

This is a very common mistake you make as a yogi. Once out of a yoga session, you end up eating junk, fast food and don’t follow a healthy diet. Remember, yoga benefits will only show if you take care of the overall functioning of your body. Healthy food, drinking water is extremely vital here.

Not tracking your progress

Another mistake that leads to weight loss failure is when you are not checking your weight loss progress. By not being aware of the progress, you easily leave mid way or start again to break the flow.

Rushing into the practice

Yoga reflects calm and cannot be practiced in a rush. If you are getting late to work and wish to lose weight with yoga, wake up early to practice rather than doing it for sometime last minute.

Expecting to soon

Weight loss results with yoga don’t happen in a day. It takes time depending on your body. By being regular and patient towards the results, you will see the benefits.

Adding stress and pressure

Lastly, if you really wish to lose weight, don’t practice yoga under stress. The pressure builds up as the process is not a rapid one. You cannot do any form of yoga if your mind is not free of stress and added pressure. So calm your senses and do the asanas and you will be surprised to see the positive results.
